“Autumn leaves red, gold and brown, falling, swirling, drifting down.
Prickly conkers, cracking, popping. Branches snap, acorns dropping.
Picking pumpkins and juicy apples too. Gathering blackberries in hedgerows for you.
Foggy mornings, damp, cold and grey. Nature’s blanket, clouding the day.
Swallows gather swooping up high, off they go and elsewhere they fly.
Shorter days, frosty and wet, Winter’s around the corner…but not quite yet.”

Be sure to start gathering wood for your fireplaces! Happy Easter to all our clients and producers! May you have a very blessed Easter and enjoy this time with your families!

On the 25th of March the Marco Fruit Team took their sales team, buyers and members of Green Network on an educational tour to Clan Leslie Estates near Harrismith. Farmer Mike Leslie, who is very well known worldwide for his low carbon footprint way of farming with the Vermiculture technique, took the time to show us around his beautiful farm.

Mike is the 5th generation to farm for Clan Leslie, his family came to South Africa from Scotland and started farming in the 1800’s. To branch out into exports, Clan Leslie started their apple production division in 1996. Mike’s farming philosophy is to keep things simple, but pay attention to detail.

He’s passionate about apple production and about where sustainability is taking the enterprise. He combines technology with applicable management and biological farming techniques to produce fruit that looks good, is healthy and nutritious, and exceeds export quality requirements. To achieve quality and production goals, Mike also partners with nature’s prime recycler – the humble earthworm.

What is VermiFert Vermicast?

VermiFert Vermicast is a high-quality, cost-effective organic soil conditioner made from vermicast, or worm cast — the manure worms produce when they break down organic material. There's a reason gardeners are encouraged to introduce worms to their gardens — look after them, and they'll look after you. Their bodies are basically factories for producing plant superfood — naturally loaded with helpful microbes, rich in nutrients plants can absorb straight away, fully broken-down and free from contaminants, and with just the right structure and consistency for good root growth and biological activity.

Mike explained every detail of what it takes to keep his apple orchards healthy and produce world class apples to us. Clan Leslie packs for Woolworths, Pick n Pay, local markets and exports their apples, his pack house needs to keep all their ducks very neatly in a row to pack their apples for each different buyer into their own specific packaging. It was really inspiring to see how Mike’s low carbon footprint way of farming is done and each one who attended this outing came back with an entire new outlook on apples, its production, packaging, logistics and sales. Thank you very much Mike for sharing and empowering our team with your knowledge, passion and success. It is an honour to have Clan Leslie products on our Marco Fruit floor.
